MRMTA CMW® Student Composer Competition
The MRMTA Canada Music Week Student Composer Competition is a wonderful opportunity for non-professional students to practise and display their ability to compose. This creative outlet is a truly rewarding learning experience for both student and teacher.
Whether it be on piano, voice, or other instruments , students are encouraged to “noodle” around. The actual writing on paper of their composition is very instructive promoting a fusion of the student’s theory and improvisatory skills. Students are guided towards greater heights in composition through both positive comments and constructive criticism by competent adjudicators.
There are five age categories to enter: 8 & under, 11 & under, 15 & under, 19 & under and Open. Winning entries from the MRMTA Student Composer Competition will then advance to the CFMTA Student Composer Competition for competition at the national level.

WINNER Preparatory 8 years & under Class 1 instrumental “Falling Through the Clouds” ($50 prize)
Malek Abdel Aziz is an emerging young musician and composer who has been studying piano since the age of six. At just eight years old, he has already developed a deep appreciation for music across genres, from classical piano repertoire to original electronic compositions. In addition to his piano studies, Malek creates and releases electronic music under the artistic name Super Shadow Glitch, with his work available on major streaming platforms. Much of his music draws inspiration from video games, creativity, and his interest in new technology. Recently, Malek has been especially captivated by Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Movement 3, reflecting both his curiosity and his growing range as a musician. When asked how he can love both electronic music and Beethoven, he simply replied: “Because I can.”Program Notes: Falling Through the Clouds
In early 2026, the composer was sitting at his cousin’s piano, experimenting with different melodies when one in particular stayed with him. He continued playing it repeatedly, gradually shaping and refining it. When he first shared the piece with his teacher, he introduced it under the title Falling Through the Clouds. The title reflects the music itself: the piece begins at the very top of the piano and then descends to the lowest chord possible, creating the feeling of falling. He later added pedal to enrich the sound and bring greater depth to the music. The composer also enjoyed exploring how the same melodies could take on different character at different speeds. He is especially proud of this composition, which won first place in his province.WINNER Category B 15 & under Class 1 instrumental “New Beginnings” ($100 prize)

My name is Emiliya Vasyl’yeva. I am 15 years old and a grade 9 student at St. John’s-Ravenscourt School. My family immigrated to Canada from Ukraine when I was one year old, settling in a small rural community north of Winnipeg.
I started taking piano lessons when I was eight years old and quickly discovered how much I loved music and composing. Two years ago, my family moved to the city, where I had the opportunity to learn from amazing theory, piano, and voice teachers who helped me grow both musically and personally.
Composing has always been especially meaningful to me. It allows me to express my emotions and work through the experiences and challenges in my life. In 2025 my theory teacher (Ruth Douglas) introduced me to my first Composers Competition. She was a great mentor through this journey. I received an Honourable Mention in Category “B” 15 years & under instrumental category for my composition “The Victory March”, which I dedicated to all fallen and alive Ukrainian soldiers who have fought and continue to fight for the freedom of my homeland.
In 2026 I won the Category B Class 1 instrumental category with my composition “New Beginnings”. I chose this title to reflect an important new chapter in my life. Moving from a small community with limited opportunities to the city opened many new doors for me, including the chance to study with experienced teachers and participate in more musical opportunities and competitions. Through this composition, I celebrate the beginning of an exciting new chapter in my life.
Music brings me peace and comfort, and I enjoy sharing the beauty of music by playing piano and singing at care homes, community events, and local manors.
