Canada Music Week – Music Writing Competition

Young composers can enter the Music Writing Competition sponsored by CFMTA. Provincial winners compete in the Canada-wide judging.

Musicthon

Have your students participate in the annual Musicthon - Kids Helping Kids.  This fundraiser is held each February in co-operation with United Way Winnipeg.

Scholarships Competition

Your students can participate in annual Scholarship Competitions sponsored by the MRMTA.  There are performance based scholarships and applied scholarships (paper application only) available totalling nearly $20,000 annually.

CFMTA Young Artist Series

A concert tour to provide experience for budding young musicians in the West. For your advanced students (Diploma level).

CFMTA Scholarship Competition

A scholarship competition is held at the biennial convention in specific disciplines with a variety of monetary prizes available to advanced students. Provincial winners are sent to the national competition.

MRMTA Student Membership Application Form

To be a member of the Association, one must hold a degree or diploma from a recognized university or conservatory or meet the necessary qualifications set down by the MRMTA, thus ensuring a high level of training and a commitment to professionalism.

The following levels of membership are available.

  • Full Membership - Winnipeg - $225; Southern Manitoba - $141; Independent - $131; Brandon & Westman - $161
  • Affiliate Membership - $106
  • Student Member - $45
  • Retired Membership - $56
  • Auxiliary Membership - $55

*The following definitions apply to pedagogy and documentation requirements:

  • "training in pedagogy" shall refer to a full credit course from a recognized institution, or a minimum of 30 hours of attendance at workshops, summer courses, master classes, or certification in a recognized music teaching methodology;
  • "successful teaching experience" shall include a 75-100 word statement from the applicant or MRMTA member describing the applicant's teaching style and studio strengths, and one of the following:  three (3) letters of recommendation from students or parents (current or previous), or conservatory examination results for six or more students with at least a 70% mark.

Full Membership:

One of the following qualifications is required.

  • A music degree (Bachelor of Music or higher) from a recognized postsecondary institution, with evidence of *training in pedagogy and *documentation of two years of successful teaching experience;
  • An Associate or Licentiate Teacher’s Diploma from a recognized institution and *documentation of two years of successful teaching experience;
  • An Associate or Licentiate Performer’s Diploma from a recognized institution, with evidence of *training in pedagogy and *documentation of two years of successful teaching experience;
  • An established reputation as a distinguished artist in the field of performance or teaching, as accepted by the Membership Committee.  Supporting materials to be submitted on request.
  • An established reputation as a teacher with a completed Level/Grade 10, a minimum of ten years' experience and *documentation of successful teaching.

Affiliate Membership:

  • Members at this Level must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Affiliate members are not Registered Music Teachers and may not use the designation RMT.  However, they can be recognized as "Affiliate Members of the MRMTA" and benefit from all programs offered through the MRMTA.
  • Affiliate members may vote at Provincial Association meetings.
  • One of the following qualifications is required:
    • an established reputation as a teacher with a complete Level/Grade 10, from a recognized conservatory, and a minimum of six (6) years of teaching experience, with *documentation of successful teaching experience;
    • an established reputation as a teacher with a minimum of ten (10 years of teaching experience and letters of recommendation from three (3) full members of the MRMTA.

Student Membership:

  • Student members are studying with a Full Member at a level consistent with Level/Grade 8 and studying pedagogy in their discipline.  A letter of recommendation to this effect from their MRMTA Teacher, or a certificate at the Level/Grade 8 from a recognized conservatory shall be provided.
  • Student members who are teaching must have a criminal record check.
  • Student members are not Registered Music Teachers and may not use the designation RMT.  However, they can be recognized as "Student members of the MRMTA".
  • Students of Student members may not participate in MRMTA programs unless agreed upon by the executive.
  • The MRMTA Student Group is self-governed with its own executive led by an RMT.
  • Student members may not vote at Provincial Association meetings and are not entitled to hold office at the Provincial level.

Retired Membership:

Retired Membership may be granted to any member who is no longer teaching. Retired Members shall enjoy Full Membership privileges. Application for this category of membership must be made in writing to the Registrar who will submit it to the Executive for approval.

Auxiliary Membership:

  • An Auxiliary Member is not teaching, but supports the objectives and goals of the Association. Annual dues shall be paid to retain membership.
  • An Auxiliary member will receive Take Note Magazine and other communications to inform them of MRMTA events. They will benefit by paying member fees, rather than non-member fees at all events.
  • Auxiliary Members are not entitled to use the designation "Registered Music Teacher" or the abbreviation "R.M.T.". They are not entitled to vote at Provincial Association meetings.

Student Group

Student Group

A subsidiary of the MRMTA for students who are working towards the completion of their diploma, as well as beginning a studio of their own.

What is Student Group?

A membership of aspiring music teachers who gather to develop skills as teachers and performers.

Who is eligible for Membership?

  • Must be studying with, and be sponsored by, a Registered Music Teacher
  • Must currently be studying at the Grade 9 level (minimum) in voice or the instrument of their choice OR Must be enrolled in an accredited university music program.
  • Piano only – must have completed both practical and theoretical requirements for Grade 8 and studying towards the RCM Elementary Level of the Piano Pedagogy Certificate with a Registered Music Teacher.

When, Where and How Much?

  • The Student Group meets 4 times a year, for 1 meeting of welcome in September, 2 workshops and 1 masterclass with distinguished clinicians. Usually on Sundays, in the afternoon. The venue will be announced before each event.
  • Annual Membership fee: $45
  • Workshop fee for Members: $5
  • Workshop fee for Guests/Non-Members: $15 (one meeting only)

Member Resources

Insurance Information

All members of the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers’ Association are eligible for the insurance coverage provided through the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Association. Please visit the following link for more information. http://www.cfmta.org/en/membership-insurance-information-2/

Members may purchase musical instrument coverage through Front Row Insurance. Click the logo above to find out more.

Coverage for select events may be covered though our insurance provider Marsh Limited. Sometimes a church or other facility would like to be named on our insurance when we rent a space to hold a recital etc. To request an incidental certificate of insurance, please contact the office administrator at [email protected]. Include the following information:

1) The name and address of the venue that would like to be on the certificate (ie- a church);
2) The date of your event (ticketed events aren't eligible);
3) Your name as the insured MRMTA teacher.

For no extra cost, the office administrator will request a certificate from our insurance provider.

School Credits Information

Canada has two nationally accredited conservatories of music, Conservatory Canada and the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Achievement in their Certification Programs is recognized for credit toward secondary school graduation in many school systems across Canada.

Each Ministry of Education determines accreditation for their provinces. The chart below outlines the high school accreditation policies of each province. Students should consult with their private music teacher or high school guidance counselor for more details.
